From SOFTICE
|
This page is meant as a "HUB" for everything about using the SOFTICE infrastructure to support laboratories or courses in Linux system administration. This application wasn't originally planned in the 3 years duration of the grant but was tackled during summer 2006.
As we started looking into that, the advantages of the virtual machine (UML) settings were quite obvious for sysadmin instruction while the most basic topics on how to use a Linux system were not. For that reason, we divided this Linux System Administration page in 3 different sections, covering 3 different levels / courses / aspects / milestones of introducing students to Linux Systems Administration. Our primary effort has been so far on the 2nd step (Elementary Linux System Administration) since it makes great usage of our current setting.
As time permit, we will work on the 3rd step (Advanced Linux System Administration). The very first step (Introduction to Linux Systems) unfortunately doesn't make usage of virtual machines and can't therefore be developed in the context of this grant. We will come back to it as time permit.
Update: These labs (and more) will be developed as part of a follow-up project, nicknamed internally "Edelweiss" which will biuld on the results developed in the context of the SOFTICE grant and expand along several directions:
- Application to Linux system administration
- Update of virtualization technologies
- Update of clustering technologies
Please contact Alessio if you are interested in adopting / adapting this material for your own courses or if you have questions not addressed on these wiki pages.

USIL User-Side Introduction to Linux Labs
The SOFTICE project is not focussed on developing courseware for courses or laboratories in which the infrastructure we are using is not directly supporting pedagogical innovations. However, we hope to be able to populate this section with appropriate introductory material focussed on training new users to be efficient on Linux-based systems. The User-Side Introduction to Linux sub-category will cover these labs.
ELSA Elementary Linux System Administration Labs
These laboratories became part of our courseware development effort for the SOFTICE grant year #2. We are assuming that they will be used after an introductory course focussed on the user-side of Linux systems but before an advanced system administration course. The Elementary Linux System Administration sub-category page covers these laboratories.
ALSA Advanced Linux System Administration Labs
This is where things like setting up DNS, DHCP servers, firewalling, network IDS and the like will go. This work is not planned in the context of the SOFTICE grant but might come as a bonus as time allows (just as the elsa labs series above did actually). The Advanced Linux System Administration sub-category page will cover these labs
LAMPSA LAMP Technologies System Administration Labs
Once the foundations are in place, the SOFTICE setting can be used to explore specific applicative domains in system administration such as data bases or web serving. This lab series will be devoted to take place after the ALSA labs and prepare students to administrate (install, configure, tune) LAMP technologies components and server-side web serving software packages. The LAMPSA sub-category page will cover these labs
