Case Study Topic Guide: SSI Clustering Technologies
Phase I: Case Study Survey
If you choose the virtualization technologies topic, you will be expected to write an introductory document covering the following items:
- Make sure you have a brief synopsis to start your presentation: e.g. what are SSI clustering technologies? What are they useful for? How do they differ from other clustering technologies (web farming, load balancing, high availability)
- Make sure you introduce the relevant terminology;
- SSI clustering
- Web farming
- High availability clusters
- Beowulf clusters (1st and 2nd generation)
- TCP/IP Load balancing
- Process migration
- Other specific clustering technologies; exchange and MySQL clusters
- Others as you see fit…
- Provide an overview of current virtualization technologies. For each of the technologies you will mention, make sure you specify;
- Name
- specific objectives
- typically successful applications
- limitations and weaknesses
- major reference(s) where your reader can find out more (web, book, articles)
- Make sure you cover at least 4 significantly different technologies. Possible technologies to focus on;
- Open SSI
- Open Mosix
- Mosix
- Scyld Beowulf
- Scyld ClusterWare
- ...
Phase II: Core Bibliography
This phase of your case study will have to focus on one specific technology of your choice. For this topic, you will probably stumble across two types of sources of information;
- sources providing information about the installation and system administration of the chosen technology
- sources providing information about the inner workings of the chosen technology
Make sure you discuss with your instructor which aspect you will be covering in your technical tutorial so that you can focus on it during this information gathering phase.
Phase III: Technical tutorial
Depending on the technology you chose in phase I and the aspect you focused on during phase II, you will have to produce a well-focused technical tutorial. The objective is to synthesize your phase II readings and design a 15 minutes PowerPoint-based presentation which will enable your colleagues to become knowledgeable on the technology you chose.
Objectives should include;
- Installation, configuration and management
- How is the process migration implemented?
- How does this impact sockets and other Inter Process Communication?
- How does this impact scheduling?
- How does this impact memory access & management? Shared memory?
As explained in the general guidelines your work has to be original, if you find many similar tutorial during Phase II, you need to find a way to distinguish yourself and provide an original contribution of your own.
